As a woman of non-Japanese descent, I was so humbled by the overall experience of learning about kabuki from Monnosuke, a professional kabuki actor, and Takisho, his apprentice. I would have never received this opportunity elsewhere if it hadn’t been for our two instructors and Professor Julie Iezzi for planning this amazing workshop. I literally got to “live and breathe” kabuki for three weeks. Those weeks flew by really fast, but they were intensive, challenging, and, most importantly, fun. It made me appreciate the rigor that comes with kabuki, but it also made me discover a hidden strength and power I had yet to realize about my own performance skills. Overall, I am a changed performer and grateful student.
